Black Heads

Explained by Dr. Jadoon

Presence of Black-heads signifies excess production of oil in the skin due to over-active sebaceous glands. Black heads are commonly found in people with acne-prone and oily skin.
What Causes Black-heads?
  • Blackheads are formed due to the clogging of hair-follicle openings in the skin with dead skin cells along with excess product of oil by the sebaceous glands. This combination of events results in the formation of Black and Whiteheads.
  • Black and white heads are essentially hardened skin oil called sebum.

There are several contributing factors. These include:

  • Having oily skin (Genetic predisposition)
  • Hormonal fluctuation.
  • Possible gut health and microbiome irregularities.
  • Excessive use of make-up on the skin which can block skin pores.
How to manage Black & White Heads.
  • Presence of Black Heads can affect the self-confidence and self-esteem of the individuals suffering from the condition.
  • In-clinic treatments to manage Black or White Heads include manual extraction, Laser & Light Therapies, professional peels and microdermabrasion.
  • The primary aim of any skin treatment or skincare products is to regulate the activity of oil producing glands (sebaceous glands) in the skin and encourage the removal of dead skin cells from skin surface (exfoliation).
  • Avoiding any make-up or other products on the skin which clog the pores, is also very important.
Skincare products to reduce Black & White Heads.

Medical-grade, cosmeceutical skin products can effectively regulate the physiology of skin cells. Skincare products helpful to treat enlarge pores include:

  • Gentle Make-up remover
  • Exfoliating Cleansers
  • Oil-free (water based) moisturisers
  • Skin Masks
  • Topical serums and creams with active ingredients (Retinol, AHA, BHA -Salicylic Acid etc) to regulate sebaceous gland activity and remove dead skin cells.

  • It is important to understand that skincare products for any skin concern, including Enlarged Pores must be used regularly (as recommended by product usage guidelines) for optimum results.
  • We recommend using the products for a minimum of 6 months and avoiding any triggering factors to see clinically visible results.
